The upcoming revisions to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system, set to take effect on July 19, 2025, represent the most substantial changes in its history.
The new system emphasizes shipment density as the primary factor in determining freight classes. Specifically, shipments with a density below 4 pounds per cubic foot will experience increased shipping costs, reflecting the greater space they occupy relative to their weight. Conversely, shipments with densities exceeding 8 pounds per cubic foot are likely to benefit from reduced rates due to their efficient use of space.
