Trucking Regs Get Axed

The U.S. Department of Transportation has proposed a sweeping rollback of federal trucking regulations, targeting over two dozen rules viewed as outdated, redundant, or costly. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy framed the move as a “common-sense” campaign to cut bureaucratic waste and empower truckers. Key changes include eliminating labeling requirements for rear-impact guards, scrapping certain lighting rules for truck tractors, and removing the need for carriers to return completed roadside inspection forms. These efforts collectively erase more than 73,000 words from the Federal Register, with DOT assuring none of the cuts compromise safety.

This deregulatory push dovetails with a recent Trump executive order demanding English fluency for U.S. drivers and expanding the regulatory rollback ratio to “10-for-1” — for every new rule, ten must go.
